Dubonnet Rouge
The Dubonnet name dates to 1846, when Paris pharmacist Joseph Dubonnet made bitter quinine palatable for Foreign Legionnaires in North Africa. This is the American branch of that story, made in Kentucky by Heaven Hill under separate US rights to the French original. Cinchona bark, the source of quinine, sits at its heart, over a Muscat of Alexandria wine base with blackcurrant, black tea and spices, sweetened with cane sugar. At 19% ABV it is drier and more herbal than the French version. The label follows a 1940s design, complete with Madame Dubonnet's cat, a fixture of the brand's artwork ever since.
