Nux Alpina Walnut Liqueur

An Austrian nocino with more spice than most, deep mahogany in the glass and built for the end of a meal.

The Purkhart family pick fresh green Weinsberg walnuts each summer near Sankt Peter in der Au and steep them for months in grape brandy, adding spices and alpine botanicals for the final month. Difford's Guide finds nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, cocoa nib and roasted coffee on the nose, then Christmas spice with raisin, prune and walnut over caramel, maple syrup and honey, and calls it more assertively spiced than most other nocino.

Serve it after dinner in a cordial glass, stir it into coffee or a cream drink, or put it to work with brown spirits in a Black Manhattan or a Walnut Old Fashioned.
