Metaxa Ouzo
Crystal clear, pungently aniseed and unmistakably Greek. Add a splash of water and it turns cloudy white, and suddenly you are at a taverna table with a plate of mezze in front of you.
The House of Metaxa has been distilling since 1888, and its ouzo is flavored with anise and mastic, the aromatic resin tapped from lentisk trees on the island of Chios. Batch distilled in copper pot stills, it is clean and dry, with licorice and a faint piney lift from the mastic on a long finish. Serve it over ice with water or soda alongside grilled octopus and olives, or reach for it in a cocktail wherever anise is welcome.
